This started as a conversation with myself on my other computer. It shows.
In any case, however, it does solidify the mythos about the dragon characters in LOP, if only by nailing down that which I already followed, in a comprehensive thing for other people to read.
So, there are these beings somewhere in between Mortal and God, and we call them Dragons because they like to take those as forms, and that may be the closest to their true forms that we can actually handle anyway. Over the millenia they have also been labeled minor gods and sometimes have been mistaken for Angels or Demons. (Which they are not-- Angels are direct messengers and aids to Mortals from God, and Demons are defiant Angels. Dragons do whatever they feel like, although they will follow rules and are not so powerful that they can get away with breaking them.)
They live in the Ether, which is a slightly different plane of existance ruled by a usually female dragon who's been called many things and who imposes rules on them to keep them from doing whatever they like.
1. No fighting in the Ether.
2. You may not act on the Mortal world directly except when interacting with an Avatar.
3. You may not interact with another Dragon's Avatar directly.
4. You may not restore your Avatar if it deliberately kills itself. (This is to give the Avatar some say in its eventual fate.)
5. If you break the rules, you will be Erased.
Many Dragons, to deal with the boredom of immortality, play elaborate games using Avatars, which are Mortals Marked as their gamepieces. Personal conflict is usually settled through these games. The rules change when the Dragons' moods do. Different Dragons have different attitudes toward their Avatars, and sometimes the personal goal in a game is to change the opinion of one's opponent toward their own Avatar.
Note there is no rule stating the Avatar has to know the rules, nor is there a rule stating that the Avatars have to do exactly as they're told. Part of the game for many Dragons is guiding the Avatar into a situation and then seeing how the Avatar reacts.
Punishment for rule-breaking is not quite death-- Dragons are deathless creatures-- but they are left utterly unable to act upon the Mortal world, and blind to it. Depending on the severity of the offense, these "time outs" can take varying time periods, or even be eternal. Sometimes, depending on her mood, the head Dragon may only give stern warnings. The lower Dragons are left to her whim as throuroughly as Avatars are to the whims of the Dragons.
Many of the Dragon Marked Avatars over the millenia become the subject of legend or the leaders of worlds. A Mark may be a tatoo of varying size or simply a shocking feature. They do not always make it into the legends, but the Mark will always be somewhere.
