SIRRAE
Sirrae is a second generational citizen of Shangri, and her innocence about what it feels like to be downtrodden shows-- as does her good upbringing. While she is not so thin-skinned that she is crushed by abuse, she is very indignant by affronts to her rights. Some of the members more familiar with prejudice tend to be a little amused by her reactions to it-- amusement Sirrae doesn't understand at all.

DEVA
One of the many "lost children" who sought out family feeling in the city, Deva's life was once a long string of makeshift homes and anger at life. For a short time she was member of a small crime ring, but after an arrest where she spent the night hearing tales about Shangri, she decided it sounded like some sort of heaven and sought it out. While it wasn't quite what she expected, it was exactly what she needed and she stayed, throwing herself at her studies.

REGINA
Regina was born to a fairly wealthy pair of 1st Kind who decided they couldn't care less what shape her ears were, and set her up for a carreer in modeling. As she grew older, however, the novelty of having a 2nd Kind model seemed to be less attractive to potential employers-- "We want a girl who looks like our buyers-- you know, normal." Disgusted, Regina almost immediatly left for the one place she WOULD be "normal," Shangri, much to her parents' distress.
Regina is a self assertive and cheery young lady, and is fairly good friends with Morgan in particular.

VINA
Cursed with severe absentmindedness, Vina couldn't tell you whether she's coming or going-- and isn't sure she wants to. Her brother, Mano, tends to keep close tabs on her- one never knows what might happen.
Somehow, though, Nijai meditations seem to help Vina's condition, and it was with this in mind that her parents sent her to the temple.

MANO
Vina's brother. While Vina is Shangri-born, Mano arrived with his parents as an infant. His world revolves around taking care of his sister, but Mano has an artistic side he uses to otherwise express himself and vent. He prefers to paint using "primitive" techniques (by Caligulan standards-- we're talking brushes and canvas here, guys)-- he finds them therapeutic.

PYRAN
Friendly and fairly level headed, Pyran was born near Shangri and illustrates vividly how different sentiments can be on either side of its walls. Usually 2nd Kind children born in the towns nearby are almost immediatly sent to Shangry orphanages to "get rid of them," and Pyran grew up in one of these. The orphanage he grew up in was run by a set of grandfatherly old men and their daughters and sons. Pyran was raised alongside the children of the orphanage owners, like all the orphans were, and was hardly short on love as a child. This has turned him into a fairly warm and open young man.

DUKE
Born in a brothel, Duke grew up with numerous insecurities about his worth and image, causing him to seek confirmation of his value in some... unusual places. He couldn't understand why, after working so hard to feel right about himself, he still felt like trash.
Finally, after years of hitch hiking, Duke found himself in the area of Shangri, where he met Cassie and Cosmo, also on their way there (although he didn't know at the time that was where he was headed.) He ended up arriving with them, and finally began to learn how to be someone he could be proud of at the temple.
His relationship with Cosmo was rocky at first, and was stressed and strained to the point of breaking apart multiple times before the two finally worked things out and began to build trust between each other.

CASSIE and COSMO
Author's note: These two get to share their profile because they're one of those pairs of twins that's unnervingly similar.
Cosmo and Cassie survived the hard street life that came with growing up in Casta Bay mainly through their twinly bond with each other. Both being blessed with good looks, the two managed to sweet-talk food into their bellies on a regular basis, and somehow managed to dodge the less pleasant aspects of the city's dark underbelly.
At the age of eleven, the twins stowed away in a supply truck (not entirely on purpose) and eventually found themselves near Shangri. Curious, they opted to check it out and remained. Cosmo has been madly in something with Duke since first meeting him, though whether it was it love or lust at first is unclear on both sides. Cassie is currently seeing a young man who was born in Shangri.

VIVA
Viva's name fits her, as the main word that can describe her is "vivacious." Fighting back a childhood illness that should have claimed her life growing up in the ghettos, she eventually subdued-- yes, subdued-- the other young men and women in her neighborhood, 2nd Kind or 1st, through sheer force of personality. Most of her peers loved her, despite that they'd often get into fights with her and end up losing.
Viva likes things simple. When they became too... complicated in the city of her birth, she moved around until she came to Shangri and got into a fight with a student from the temple, and got her butt handed to her. She joined the next day.

DRACO
Draco is Shangri born and has lived what he considers a fairly uneventful life. His parents would disagree, as they sent him to the temple to curb his mischievous streak. He is fun loving and became fast friends with Viva after he "handed her her butt" when they first met.

DARIUS
One of the few 2nd Kind born on Shangri's outskirts who wasn't instantly sent into the city to live in an orphanage, Darius was actually born into one of Caligula's far less advanced subcultures-- the tribal peoples who live and die in the Sa mountains. In many of these cultures the birth of a 2nd Kind child is considered a good omen instead of something shameful, and Darius was raised as such. He was sent to the city to learn (Shangri is considered a font of wisdom and mysticism by such people, and rightly so.)

ALEX
Alex was Shangri born, with a fairly uncomplicated childhood. Like most of the Shangri born he was rather shocked by bigotry outside the city's walls, but he bounced back fairly quickly and uses sarcasm and humor to strike back without serious repurcussion-- he also does this to cheer up his cohorts.

THUD
Author's note: Ah, the incomparable Thud. X3 Among my favorites.
Thud's pidgin speak is actually a very thick tribal accent-- he grew up in the jungles of the Klaw continent on Caligula and only began to learn common speech as a young adult (and Mira's father wasn't the best teacher when it came to grammar, so he uses the grammar he does know.) Thud is much more fluent in CSL, Caligulan Sign Language, because he had greater motivation through Mira to learn it.
He is far smarter than he comes across as and has a wry sense of humor that often startles people.
Thud is very fond of Synn-- if it weren't for Synn's interference he wouldn't have been able to join the army, and get closer to Mira. Synn, for his part, is modestly embarrassed and despite himself often gets rather impatient when Thud teases him or misunderstands him, although he returns the friendship.

LYNNAH
Lynnah is a force of nature more than a teenage girl, although that doesn't make her eventual mad crush on Green any easier to admit. Lynnah does everything in spades-- she jumps at life with the theory that if you've never woken up hurting, you've never lived. She is silly and quirky and likes to give things complicated names, like Wulfweardsweorth, the name she gives to the Drakon'ai she ends up adopting.

VICKIEJel's cousin, Vickie is insecure about her looks and hates her weight, and deals with it by piling on makeup. (Better than starving herself, the poor thing.) She and Lynnah end up at odds with one another, since Vickie only sees how she can't measure up to Lynnah's curvaceous figure and Lynnah thinks her makeup is tacky and wants to destroy Vickie's supply. (And is convinced Vickie would be so much cuter if she washed the stuff off her face. )
